The Academy of Arts & Sciences' (A.I.A.S.) D.I.C.E. Summit (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain)
Las Vegas Feb.28 - March 1, 2002
President & Co-Founder of Naughty Dog, Jason Rubin, spoke
on "Designing for the Mass Market"
What does it take to design a game that has appeal for
both young and old players, male and female, hardcore and
novice gamer alike? Knowing
how to hit that "sweet spot" can be the key to megahit after
megahit, but it's an elusive target that few developers ever strike.
Jason shared strategies for formulating designs that address the vagaries
of the mass market.
Topics included: -Know what the audience wants:
What exactly is the mass market and is there any way to predict what
game ingredients will attract it? -Niche vs. broad appeal:
What are the risks, limitations and rewards associated with going after
a broad market versus a finely targeted segment? -History lessons:
How can we look at past hits to determine what will be successful in
the future? |
