D.I.C.E. Summit 2010 and AIAS Awards

D.I.C.E. Summit 2010 and AIAS Awards

Richard Lemarchand, Co-Lead Game Designer on UNCHARTED 2, and I just arrived in Las Vegas several hours ago, where both of us will attend our first D.I.C.E. Summit.

The easiest way to explain the D.I.C.E. Summit is that it’s kind of like a mini-GDC focusing on the business of making games, but really a bit more on a high level. It’s notable industry figures giving us their perceptions and big picture about making and selling games right now. And there’s no shortage of notables—just in our first session today you could spot key folks from Epic, Portalarium, Valve, Silicon Knights, Insomniac, Ubisoft, EA, Activision, and on and on and on. Not to mention we’re all essentially trapped in the same hotel the conference is at, so it’s a great time to meet new people, see old friends, catch up and share ideas, in a quieter, more subdued environment than other industry events.

I really enjoyed one of the opening sessions today, “Hot Topics,” during which Adam Sessler moderated a series of three mini debates on different topics between two notable industry people—one on casual games, one on narrative (and narrative innovation) in games, and one on being an independent studio in this industry. I can’t really pinpoint what it was exactly, but not only was the session entertaining, but it felt inspiring as well. Hopefully you’ll be able to catch some of it online at some point soon.

Just looking over the schedule for the next two days promises a conference full of sessions that will likely prove just as interesting and inspiring.

If you look carefully, you’ll notice one Richard Lemarchand, whom I mentioned at the beginning of this post, as the first speaker of the conference proper with his interestingly titled presentation ”Uncharted 2: Among Thieves—How To Fly By The Seat Of Your Pants Without Crapping Them.” I told Richard that he’s going to set the pace for the rest of the summit. Good luck Richard!

Tomorrow, a bunch of other Dogs will be joining us to attend the 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. This is a huge deal for us, as UNCHARTED 2 received an awesome 15 nominations from our peers in the interactive entertainment industry. It means a lot to us to see our peers, all of whom we respect and have respect for their work, recognize our achievement with UNCHARTED 2 in this way. We’ll all have our fingers crossed we pick up some wins during the ceremony on Thursday night. Wish us luck!

ND’s level of detail IS amazing, but you also have to give kudos to Guerrilla Games seeing how it’s their character concepts.

@arne, GL ND! Hope you guys win at most 14 nominations! probably wont win that “Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play” *cough 1.05*

DIRK_DIRKA_DIRK posted February 27, 2010 6:59 pm

gotta say - new maps for multiplayer are a major disappointment!  Clearly not designed for survival mode - there is nowhere to hide or climb to higher ground like all the other maps.  Thumbs down

RecessBeginsNOW posted February 17, 2010 5:17 pm

And for the people complaining about the update just get used to it, if your good at the game you should enjoy it since its easier to kill.

I actually responded in several threads within those boards, but there are multiple threads. Sorry, I do my best but I can’t keep up with them all. You can find my posts here: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/tracker?user.id=1319198

Maybe if someone would reply or respond to to comment about the update the ppl wouldn’t have to. You guys could at least acknowledge that you are looking into everyones concerns, I mean that would be the professional thing to do. smile

arne posted February 18, 2010 1:34 am

I have a reply on the second page of the Title Update 1.05 post (and there’s a comment now on the blog post itself, prior to your comment being posted) from me discussing that we’re giving the adjustments we made some time to breathe first.

RJBrian posted February 19, 2010 1:27 am

Ok cool, that’s all we ask. smile

Could you just make a new poll because your gonna lose alots of ppl including me . Do u guyz atleast read comments and have readed the petition

arne posted February 17, 2010 5:21 pm

See my reply above—please move over to the PlayStation.com forums if you’re having any issues with the comments. We’ve responded there and will continue to read and respond.

cstutes posted February 17, 2010 11:50 pm

he has not responded there so don’t bother going there bro...its 46 pages of posts on the “post here if you don’t like 1.05” thread...and not a single one from arne...so don’t waste your time as i did searching for a response...it is nowhere to be found amongst the 1000+ comments (both on ND and PS forums together)

arne posted February 18, 2010 1:30 am

See again my post above, I’ve linked to where I’ve been able to respond to some of the threads and I have several responses to the first page of comments on that post as well. We’re working on making it easier to spot when a Dog replies on the ND.com blog as well. I’m sure that’s not helping.

RecessBeginsNOW posted February 17, 2010 5:19 pm

ND everyone will only comment to cry about the update. Dont listen to them they cant play since they suck so they complain about dieing to fast LOL

jnco10999 posted February 17, 2010 5:54 pm

That’s kinda funny cause I’m complaining about how good I’m doing in the game, reason being is because it takes no skill anymore to get kills. No sense of satisfaction whatsoever. So next time you actually try to speak for everybody that hates the patch, actually say something smart, cause your not looking like the brightest crayon in the box. Owned.

There’s only so many times we can respond and let you know that we’re reading your feedback, but we’d like the dust to settle in both the debate and in our players adjusting to the changes first.

Thank you Arne, for atleast replying and giving an answer much appreciated. While i am still upset about the changes, and refuse to play, or pay for anything now. Uncharted 2 was the greatest game, and gave PS3 made bragging rights, hope you guys keep winning stuff.

crXss posted February 17, 2010 11:35 pm

Arne, it’s really hard to stay on topic when 1.05 is on everyone’s mind. All we’re asking for more additions to the multi-player experience (e.g.- a rewind button for the cinema) and less extreme IN-game changes.  I don’t even care about the less health anymore but the weapons definitely need to be rebalanced, it doesn’t make sense that the weapons you spawn with are the strongest ones.  At least make an on/off toggle option for Auto-Shoulder before the the weekend.

Arne-

I seen lots of people complaining about Title Update 1.05 from the health standpoint....and while I don’t really like it eaither, I can probably learn to deal with it.

However, I’m not seeing alot of mention about glitches that are still happening after 1.05.  Last night I played 5 games, and had glitchers in 3 of them.  It’s very, very frustrating to be dealing with the new health and also have people shooting at me from under the board and behind walls.  Last night the problems happened in the Fort and Temple.

So my biggest concern right now is ND addressing the glitches.  If you aren’t aware of what the are, put out something where people could report them so that they could be dealt with.

There has to be a way to fix the maps so it doesn’t happen.  And if the maps can’t be fixed, maybe there is a way to add a new trophy called “CHEATER”....If somebody gets a certain number of kills while glitching, they would get the cheater trophy....which would give them a negative $100,000K and take 10 ranking points away....

I’m struggling a bit with the new health...and it’s kinda frustrating not being able to really defend yourself anymore.  I used to be active on maps....running around and looking for confrontations....but that stragegy isn’t so great on most maps now.  You’ve basically gotta stay in cover, camp and hide most of the time.  Not nearly as fun but I guess it’s a matter of opinion.

All in all, I do appreciate support ND is providing.  I look forward to more maps, weapons, skins, playlists, etc.

However, the thing that will really drive me away from the game are the glitchers.  They really frustrate me and I will continue to leave games I see it happening in....and I don’t care about penalties.  And it’s a shame I need to incur penalties myself if I’m leaving a game because of a glitcher.

Please keep up the good work, evaluating what’s going on, and keeping the game FAIR and FRESH.

JayLowe posted February 18, 2010 7:50 am

In terms of ‘allowing the dust to settle’, I honestly can’t see it being any different to how it is now. There’s so much anger and disappointment in the new update, it quite simply won’t just disappear over a couple of weeks. And if it does disappear, it’s only because people would have got tired of bashing their head against a brick wall and have decided to leave altogether.

I’m sorry, Arne. I don’t mean to sound harsh, and I do still love Naughty Dog as a company. I just can’t help but feel extremely disappointed about this change. I’ve given it a number of tries, but it’s just not for me anymore – it’s not fun.

And before anyone says ‘it’s because you suck’, believe me, I don’t. In fact, I was doing just as good, if not better after the new update in terms of KDR. But it’s simply no longer a fun, all action, exciting experience for me anymore.

dollarbilllz posted February 18, 2010 8:00 am

JayLowe posted February 18, 2010 4:23 pm

I don’t have ‘a girl’, but I do have a fiancee, “buds”.

What I’d like to know is what on earth has that got to do with me not liking the new update? And one post, which took all of about forty-five seconds to type, is “spending so much time”? It’s not my problem that you’re quite clearly an immature moron who doesn’t understand the concept of an opinion.

Thanks for keeping U2AT MAD FUN!!!

BreasticalsIRL posted February 18, 2010 10:59 am

Naughty Dog just a few thoughts I’d like to share with you.

In my time playing U2 MP i’ve seen my fare share of totally unevenly matched game so I suggest to combat this why don’t you do a set-up like the following
Levels 1-10 get matched against each other
Levels 11-20 get matched against each other
Levels 21-30 get matched against each other
Levels 31-40 get matched against each other and
Levels 41-60 get matched against each other .

I’ve seen a couple of games do this the two that done this very well (Metal Gear Solid 4 and Halo3)
This helped me starting games for the first time so im not getting mauled but also kept it competitive the better I got.

And maybe a system were party’s would get matched against other party’s more often as your aware party’s have a major advantage over a randomly matched team keyword “Communication”.

Also it would be very convenient if you were some how able to incorporate your website into the multi-player menu.
Just so I along with others wouldn’t have to quit out of the game to view your website (Which im regularly on).

Hope this got you thinking and hope you win some rewards (As if you won’t).

Healthorg posted February 18, 2010 11:50 am

Congrats ND!

BreasticalsIRL posted February 18, 2010 12:03 pm

Sorry I also had a gametype that I forgot to mention.

It’s sort of a free for all/Team game.

Picture this everyone starts away from each other and a all silver AK-47, M4 or a FAL spawns randomly somewhere at this point everyone is against each other and can kill each other but your kills dont count(AT ALL NOT EVEN TOWARDS YOUR TOTAL KILL COUNT) and you get no cash(To prevent people hoe-ing cash or kills)
The only way to get kills or money is to pick up the silver gun at that moment everyone else becomes a team (And CAN’T kill each other) and have to kill the silver gun carrier.
While they they to do that the silver gun carrier has to rack up as many kills as he can until he dies or ammo runs out.

If he dies the gun simply falls to the ground and everyone scrambles to recover it but if it runs out of ammo it spawns randomly again. At either moment it turns back into a free for all to see who can get the silver gun.

Whats so important about the silver gun I hear you ask.
Well the score limit is 25 or whatever and each kill with the silver gun brings you closer to that limit.

Power weapons I think wouldn’t be fair for this game type (Shotguns, pistole, Grenade Launcher, and RPG)

Hope you like my idea.

jwsplayer posted February 18, 2010 12:35 pm

With Naughty Dog up for more awards, I remember IGN review of the pre v1.05  Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Review  http://ps3.ign.com/articles/102/1026373p4.html just a couple of quick quotes for those who do not want to read the whole thing.

“To say that the multiplayer is fun would be a massive understatement. For my money, this is one of the best multiplayer experiences that you’ll find in any game around....”

“There’s a lot to the strategy for every mode of multiplayer offered in Uncharted 2, but I don’t really need to delve into any of that because it all plays exactly like the single-player game, which is fantastic news.

For a game that relies so much on environmental traversal to be able to offer the same exact mechanics while playing online, Naughty Dog has really tied everything together brilliantly. “

“If you like to get up high and drop down on your opponents in the single-player game, you can do that online. If you like to stealthily flank guys online and take them out silently, you can do that in the single-player game. The multiplayer is both a massive and natural extension of the single-player experience, and the fact that Naughty Dog was able to pull it off so seamlessly is applause-worthy.”

I just have to sit back and wonder what the IGN’s review of the multiplayer would look like now with v1.05....

I am sorry Naughty Dog, I guess that I don’t have to say any more IGN’s review said it all.....

Doesnt matter if a few days have past or a month. The multiplayer is still gonna b boring. I dont play anymore, instead i am constantly checking the blog for any hope in change. I was a level 54 i had bought the skins. this game was my favorite of all time. Now I just get pissed when i think about it. Its too easy to win now. i get 25 and 2 with no sense of accomplishment, b4 if i got that it was because i was on the zone. There is just no satisfaction. IT DOESNT OWN, ITS NOT COMPETETIVE ITS NOT REWARDING.

dear ARNE,

The thing that is really PISSING PEOPLE OFF(including myself) is that WE NEVER ASKED FOR YOU GUYS TO CHANGE THE HEALTH AND WEAPON DAMAGE. We always thought it was perfect. It was all balanced and fair which made it fun because it actually REQUIRED SKILL. now its not fun, cover is irellivent, and everyone camps now.. theres no skill required. the auto shoulder switch gets people killed a lot because it doesnt aim where they think its going to aim…

I know u guys are in a lot of stress BUT COME ON. change it back to the way it was BEFORE THE DLC comes out...We arnt going to buy the DLC if the game is still like this before then… WE NEVER ASKED FOR THIS… it was you guys. so dont say WERE GANA WAIT FOR THE DUST TO SETTLE. because u made this problem. and were not going to adjust...ive played about 15 games so far with this update and i cant...no one on my PSN can adjust.. they all quit and play other games now until u change this… All ur hardcore UC2 players simply arnt playing anymore...FIX THIS NOW!!!!! not later NOWWW!!!

tts42572 posted February 18, 2010 1:31 pm

Arne-

I’ve got a solution....ND should do another survey on the home page.

Put up a poll and let us vote on the new update.

Have the choices be:

A) Love everything about the update

B) Like the medals but don’t like the health adjustments that were made

C) Don’t like anything about Title Update 1.05

I’d love to see the results of a poll like this.  If it turned out more than 50% pick A, then I think we’d all need to keep our mouths shut about the update and move on.

But if the majority picks B & C, then you know there is a problem with the health that should be addressed.  Then ND could consider changing or at least maybe making the reduced health a new playlist that people could play if they wanted to.

Seems like it would be a very democratic solution....

For the record, my vote would be B.  I like the medals...but didn’t like the health adjustments.
