At today’s GDC session, “UNCHARTED 2: HDR Lighting,” John Hable referenced a two-part presentation by Pal-Kristian Engstad, “Introduction to SPU Optimizations.” We’ve posted links to that the presentation after the jump.

Naughty Dog programmer John Hable presented a talk called “UNCHARTED 2: HDR Lighting” to close out GDC10 during the last timeslot of the final day.

During his talk John referenced a two-part presentation by Pal-Kristian Engstad, our Lead Engine Programmer, which covers optimizing for the SPUs.

i agree to this.
i use Glass Jar now, but i used to have used Invalid a lot back a while ago, but the money max at 50k no matter how many you kills.
sometime i kill like 35+ more in Plunder, but the money is always max at 50k. only double cash days that it go to 100k.

but yeah i want it to be 100k max man, that would make people play the game more.

that way, everyone can get to lvl X faster and once that happen, you will see a lots of lvl X people play against each other, it would be awesome.

also fix the damn stupid respawn, it suck so bad hehe in the 1.06 update.

I understand why people would want that to happen, but it wouldn’t be right.

I’m a lvl 60 player and it was a very, very long and hard way to get there. It just wouldn’t be fair if other people could get there twice as fast now with a 100k max or so.

And again, I hate the game as it is now. I keep on playing, but only because I hope ND will finally give us the game we bought back.

Please don’t betray us. I wouldn’t have paid for your game if the MP had always been like that. I rental would have been sufficient in that case. Or would you give me 30$ back now because I only have half of what I paid for now? I don’t think so…

MY POINT EXACTLY, I GOT ABOUT 20 OF THOSE NOW!!!
I WOULDN’T MIND DYING A LOT TIMES IF I WAS DOING IT FOR A LOT OF MONEY!!!
I JUST GOT TO LVL 57 (VII) NOW AND IT ASKS ME MORE THAN $8 MILLION DOLLARS TO LEVEL UP.
IF I DO PLUNDER ONLY I WOULD NEED MORE THAN 200 MATCHES WITH 50K EACH..... OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG

yeah i agree with you all too.im always playing plunder-its my favourite type of game. im used to put invalid to win money, but with 50k i just have to kill atleast 10 to have the top of money. please ND put 100k so we can get faster to level X and like a guy said people will be more interested and play more the game

I’m really starving for information on UC3. Anything really, I know you guys are optimizing the system so you can put more things on screen. I just want to know more, hopefully soon.

I disagree that you deserve all of this success. I used to think that, but post 1.04, no way. You HAD a good game and completely ruined your reputation and alienated a large number of your fans. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, so all of you who are excited for ND, that’s fine, but ND will not be recieving any more of my buisness in the future.
I think I’m done complaining/worrying about U2 (for now).

I’m totally with these guys. 1.04 all the way. 1.06 is not what we paid for.

By the way, a match at the Fort just ruined my day. Two cheaters killed me all the time. I ended up 22-18 and my team had no chance to win. 16 of my kills were due to the cheaters. These guys wouldn’t have such an easy time if the weapon damage was still at the 1.04 level. But now… bang bang kill, bang bang kill. Yeah, cheaters and campers FTW, right?!

I think that we should add a few new things to the next dlc/update

a. FIX Glitches
b.Take 50 k cap off
c.make other people than drake wet
d. add new skin such as Shamballan warrior,batman, lazaravich healed, and a donought version of everybody
e. Make another game!

Nice work ND, you got your rewards now how about fixing the problems with multiplayer? The two main things you REALLY need to fix are: 1. The spawns, Oh good lord the spawns, When I kill someone on the other team, I should NEVER see him spawn again right in front of me! Please at least try to make it so we spawn somewhere safe and not right in the middle of a fire fight! 2. The glitches of the fort. I thought the last update was suppose to fix these! I dont know if u just fixed some and not others but jeeze its getting out of hand here. I never vote for that map because there is always someone that will try to glitch there. Its a shame too because its actually a really cool map and always has fun games as long as nobody glitches. Please FIX THESE PROBLEMS!

Very nice. Now Please get the 1.07 update hear now, and change the FAL to how it was, INCREASE the grenades radius by one meter and put a 5 second timer one them! make the Dragon Sniper how it was at the 1.05 update. And PLEASE, PLEASE DONT FIX ANYTHING THAT IS NOT BROKEN!

Haha, me too, that’s happened twice now, it’s just not right.

I boycotted through the entirety of 1.05, then came back for 1.06 to give it another go and fell in love with it all over again. The glitches on The Fort are as bad as ever, and the spawn pooints have got screwed up, and I still preferred the FAL the way it was before. But I can look past those things.

I don’t want to get too attached though, I can just imagine that they’ll turn it all on its head and make more problems for the next update now. >_>

why aren’t you guys replying or fixing the comments. There is a seriously problem. Also, can you give us anything on a new dlc or Uchated 3. Two more things. 1. When will other characters get wet besides Nate. 2. Also, are you guys working on saying what map and mode ppl are playing on under your friends name like MW2. Thanks! I didn’t realize you folks used GCC, but could you reach out to the Cell and GCC communities to find other like minded people who would want and could work towards SPU optimization? I’m not a hard core programmer, but it would seem GCC doesn’t have enough knowledge of the architecture.

The 50k maximum HAS TO STAY!

It was a long, hard and sometimes even frustrating way to get to level 60.

It just wouldn’t be right if others only had to do half the work.

If you want level 60, invest as much time as we 60ers did. It wouldn’t be something special if everyone could get there twice as fast.

Where the hell are all these ND guys? Are you trying to ignore all the problems for the rest of this game’s life?

Naughty Dog has mentioned elsewhere that the 50k limit will stay to prevent people farming kills in plunder.
They are right.
You’ve all seen a high level teams kill farming some poor newbs.
Increasing the money cap to 100k will only make it worse.

All us level 60s worked really hard to get our level, and it would be a real kick in the teeth to raise the cap now.

If getting rank 60 is that important to all you asking for the cap to be raised, then you should get there like the rest of us.

I think the 50k should stay !!! thats why level 60 is so special ! with out the 50k limit there will bo no speciallity at ALL!!! its hard ‘it take a long time to get it ‘ but hey thats what it is all about !! not everyone can get it!!! PLEASE LEAVE IT ON 50k.. maybe 70 ....

I have some problems going online , they say error blah blah blah , but after several tries , still manage to get in. ND please fix this issue.
Yes it was a good thing to decrease the accuracy of DOWN THE IRONS , but ND lowered the rate of fire of FAL by too much. It is too too slow already , mind increasing a little? Because of that , i totally stop using FAL. Dissapointed ):
I think maxing 50k points to each game is also very little ! Not 100k definitely , but maybe 60 or 70k will do? It is very hard to level up after reaching lvl 52 and above. But its up to you guys ND. Hope you guys read this and take note. Thanks a lot :D
I love Uncharted 2 multiplayer , it is one of the best games i have ever played ! Hope you guys keep up the good work in future updates. Good luck !

You know you had the Game of the Year - Now you don’t in my books.

There are so many things that need fixed;

-The grenades are completely useless crank them back up!
-The FAL is now much worse than the AK47!
-Take away the 50k maximum for money on each game, i could be level 60 by now because ND is too noob friendly!
-Spawning is terribe i get killed then i spawn right next to my killer and guess what I GET KILLED AGAIN!

RecessBeginsNOW Haven’t you seen every1 compaining about all the bad things that Naughty Dog have added into the or maybe not bothered to add.

I love Uncharted 2, and i’d hate to see it go downhill, so ND please fix some of the problems.

First off let me say that I HATED 1.05 and I flew off the handle saying I would never play this garbage again. After playing 1.06 for awhile I must say that I am back to loving this game. The hitboxes are a great fix and the tweaking of the FAL has made it a lot easier to use the entire map. I think the grenades are fine but I didn’t really have a problem with the way they were. The only thing you guys need to fix is the spawning and I have faith that you guys will get that back to the way it was in 1.04. I still get kills with the FAL but it has its strengths and weaknesses like every other weapon in the game now.

ps I would think that you guys would have responded to 1.06 by now. Arne used to be on here all the time and now I never read his posts. On playstation forums he hasn’t logged on in a week???

hey guys i need help with the matchmaking in uncharted 2.
because the levels are fine, but the ping is very high, when im playing and i have 1 bar connection the game is perfect but when i have all the bars my character gets freexed and then someone kills me.¬¬
fix the marchmaking that if you are american, play with american people, not with people from UK please fix this.

That is completely unfair to the players who made their rank the correct way. Whats the point of everyone being a level 60? The only way it would work is if they increased the top level rank to like XXX or something.

I agree with Recess, it’s hard to wait another month (to April 15) to finally get the four maps we have been waiting for and all that other good stuff. I understand it’s difficult to make these amazing maps so quickly but maybe if you had a section entirely devoted to DLC u could get us what we really want faster. Also, after April 15 I am unaware of any further DLC, is there going to be DLC after this?
The game is perfect now, just change the grenades back, what we really want is DLC.
Thanks for all ur hard work, can’t wait till April 15th, all be enjoying the game till then.

Let the 50k cap stay.
Taking the cap to 100k would only encourage people to farm kills in Plunder even more than now.

It pisses me off how everyone’s complaing about this, we’ve all had to level like this and you’re going to have to as well if you really need a high level. Also farming kills in Plunder isn’t something to be proud of.

I’m not excited about the new maps at all. New maps mean new (or should I say “even more") glitches for cheaters.

Unless we get an update that gives the game its old face (1.04) back, I won’t buy any DLC. ND fooled me into buying their stuff once by saying “we’re listening”, which made me think we get 1.04 back, but they won’t fool me again. I will wait until the game I bought is actually back.

i think it was in christmas that ND put a special update or something that had 100k. i actually thought it was “permanly"(im not sure how to write this word-sry). but the next time i played after this 100k update i only saw 50k. i said what the hell? and since that moment im always bored because i use invalid for almost damn nothing.i kill 10 guys and all i have to do left is die. sry to say but its BORING.so please ND turn it up to 100k and this time “permantly” and we’ll stop bugging you on this

hello its me again listen im hearing some rumors some things that i didnt understand:is there going to be version 1.07? and if it is will it have 2 vs 2 game mode? actually im not understanding. 2 vs 2 as in friends mode or the whole world? i just dont understand.
ps:does anyone know a glitch in the top of the lost city map? yea im a glitcher but most of the glitches i use off the real game so dont worry lol plz answer me to my questions. i’d apreciated

I don’t know why a wall isn’t automatically an unaccessible point in a game, but there are certain places that, if you do it right, allow you to disappear into a wall for example.

Once you’re in there, you can move around and at some point the map will completely disappear and you have a perfect view on all the players which are then walking through the air/sky (only from your point of view of course). From there on, you can shoot and kill everyone on the map without any problems, even if ten walls were normally between you two.

But only losers and ***holes do that kind of s***. I don’t even know how you can possibly enjoy it. There’s no challenge at all and everyone hates you because you ruin the game.

Speaking of walls, yesterday I was melee-killed through a wall. How is that possible?

Also, is it not possible to create some kind of “death-lock” to prevent laggers from killing you when they actually shouldn’t have the chance to?

Yesterday I shot a guy in the face with a shotgun and he didn’t die (btw, it’s ridiculous how you make this weapon more and more useless each time). Then he punches me and at the same time I make the second shot which kills him. He drops dead, then I die too (melee). That’s so annoying. He never had a chance for a second punch…

A few more things:

Penalty system: I lost 160k in two hours. The game freezes, has connection errors and whenever I go back to the main menu after such an error, I get a 40k penalty. Why haven’t you fixed this yet? Good thing I don’t have to care about money anymore but this is a serious problem and you need to do something about it asap.

Weird deaths: I don’t know how else to call it, but sometimes I jump up or down somewhere and I die all of a sudden. It’s just a normal place in the game. Seriously, what the hell? In a game with stats like K/D ratio, this is just unacceptable.

Steel fist kills: Those are way overpowered now. One shot with the pistol and a punch can kill you now. It used to be well balanced before, but now it’s just ridiculous. Also, the first punch does way too much damage to your character.

It’s also ridiculous how long we haven’t heard anything from you guys. There are many complaints and lots of things are wrong with the MP lately. Stop ignoring us and reply to our posts regularly.

And the fort is my nightmare because of all the cheaters, every game I play in the fort there is a cheater. My plan was to go up there and kill them, but of course when I fly in the air an try to get up there, then they kill me!

ND A LOT OF THINGS NEED TO HAPPEN ASAP.
1. FIX THE GLITCHES IN THE FORT AND THE NEW MAPS
2. RELEASE MORE COOP
3. RAISE THE 50K CAP BECAUSE I MAX OUT IN LIKE 3 OR 4 MINUTES IN EVERY GAME.
5. CHANGE THE SNIPER BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS.

AND HERES A FEW SUGGESTIONS 4 THE NEW APRIL DLC

CHRACTERS: BASEBALL DRAKE, ORANGE SHIRT CHLOE AS A VILLIAN, WINTER SULLY, RIKA RAJA FOR EVERYONE, AND DANIEL PINKERTON.

MAPS: NEPAL WARZONE, MOUNTAINS WHERE THEY HAVE ROPE SWINGS AND ALL THAT STUFF, A JUNGLE MAP, AND A TRAIN YARD.
WELL ND THATS ALL I HAVE FOR NOW

May i just say something, i think you should make a new dlc with 4 maps and a free for all mode.
Unfortunately on the web you can’t do a poll =(.
So if you’d like a free for all mode plz say “free for all ND”!

Anyways, Naughty dog i hope you would make grenades throw-able back as well as that, i think everybody agrees is fix spawn points.

Subject: DLC
In every DLC there should be 3-4 maps 7 skins, so here are my choice of skins.
Winter Sully.
Sack-boy-LBP.
Kratos-God of war.
Guardian-Uncharted 2.
Enemies-Uncharted 2.
UN-shirted drake.
Maybe, the two Christmas Nathan Drake and Harry Flynn.

Last but not least, If i was all of you i’d say why 1.04 further versions are better then that.
More weapons like Mp40 SMG.But most of all i’d love C4 in-game-Multi-player because i think everyone would find this most fun.

Although I REALLY want u guys to address the problems these gamers are mentioning, I’m not gonna focus on that just yet. Skins; I like to be able to see my character and like this game. Skins are the future my friends. 1st off we need some villian skins for the lady gamers. (Baronness[G.I.Joe]is the only one that springs to mind rite now)As for heroes,I gotta few suggestions; Punisher,Robocop,Terminator,Snake Pliskin,Deadpool,Cable,Snake-Eyes,Nick Fury,Neo[Matrix],Trinity,Aeon Flux,Jill Valentine,Lara Croft,Cross[Wanted] in assasins suit, etc, etc. I realize publishing and licensing and things of that sort would make it hard.I think though, that companies whom hold the rights to these characters could be easily convinced to let them be used on this game that is basically what those type of characters are all about...gunplay,neck-snappin’,and blowin’ people up.I know from playing UC2 alone,a lot of gamers share this sentiment, and would jump at the chance to purchase a skins pack similar to this if not this very one.It could a very sound decision,both fiscally and fundamentally,to onsider something like this for the near future. Just some food for thought. Thanx for your time.

Sorry but the online portion of this game IS NOTHING BUT GARBAGE NOW.

Please give us a playlist with 1.04 settings so we can play the game that we bought and loved, not the current trash that youve changed it to.

Give us an option to choose it from a separate playlist at the very least. Do you people really want to loose many of the first U2 online players taht freaken badly?

ALSO, THERE ARE STILL THE SAME GLITCHES, ESPECIALLY IN FORT. AND THE SPAWNS IN ALL LEVELS ARE COMPLETE CRAP, not just the new one like I thought it would be.

pre 1.05 was SUCH A BETTER GAME, U2.5 sucks and I would have never bought it like this back in OCT.

Also, WHY are you trying to “make it more realistic” when its a game where even with the new settings 2 punches, from a girl even, DOES THE SAME AMOUNT OF DAMAGE OF 10 BULLETS>

THE game wasnt designed to be realistic, it was designed around FUN thats why. Now with all these changes it is not fun, especially with the horrible spawns.

Just give us the option to play the old way and make everyone happy. Or dont and continue to ruin what was once a REALLY FUN online game(1.04 and below).

Obviously ND no longer cares about this game or the fans who made it successful back in October.

They will just keep releasing DLCs with horrible spawns/glitches to the dwindling community and will keep collecting awards for a game WHICH NO LONGER EXISTS.

I think it’s useless to say that this is really the best game I ever played. I play it everyday, and I enjoy it a lot playing it with my friends.
But lately… I was thinking that maybe you shouldn’t add too many new things, but make better the features of the game.
I mean:
- I STILL CAN’T UNDERSTAND why in this game Sully seems to be COMPLETELY forgotten. Ok, I can understand that about the story, but what about the multiplayer? Why the hell we’re playing as the model of Sully from Uncharted 1 ? You already have the character model of Uncharted 2 (the one of the Borneo level), ALSO HIS WINTER VERSION (at the last cutscene of the game). Well, we have 5 Drakes, 3 Elenas, 3 Flynns (!), 2 Chloe, and why the hell we have only an “old” version of one of the best characters of the Uncharted saga? C’mon. I’m sure that everyone would love to play as U2 Sully and WINTER Sully. He’s not less important than Flynn, I think.
- Speaking about that, Heist Chloe would be awesome too. You already have these characters models… is it really impossible make these characters playable in multiplayer?
- Instead of making playable characters who are not in the story (...without voices), you should improve the PRINCIPAL characters of the game.
- About the 1.05 update, I really miss the matches of the 1.04… that was SIMPLY perfect. And NO, I’am not a n00b, I don’t have kills problems, I’ve got a good ratio. But something is telling me that it would me MOOORE better if we could return to the 1.04 features.

Hope you could do something, especially about the Sully part, but don’t worry, this will remain the BEST game we ever played. Thanks a lot for making us so happy with this awesome game.
