GDC Sessions - Saturday, March 13

If you’re still in San Francisco this Saturday for GDC, and haven’t already succumbed to the effects of all the GDC activities, feel free to drop by any one of our four sessions today.

This is also your last day to drop by the Naughty Dog booth at the Career Pavilion to ask any and all questions you may have about seeking employment at Naughty Dog and our studio culture. In that vein, if you’re looking to work in the game industry, or if you want some tips on how to make yourself a more attractive candidate, may I suggest you check out game designer Jacob Minkoff’s session, “Getting Noticed: Why You Need an Online Portfolio and How to Make One.”

Uncharted 2 Character Pipeline: An In-depth Look at the Creation of U2’s Characters
Richard Diamant (Lead Character Artist, Naughty Dog Inc.), Judd Simantov (Lead Character Technical Director, Naughty Dog Inc)

Some of the topics covered will include how we used our propriety modeling and UV tools to deal with output a variety of meshes in an efficient manner. How we use Maya referencing to allow us to maintain one skeleton for all the different outfits. Our facial rigging setup and how we are able to use one skeleton for both male and female characters.

The process of sculpting our character, building our arbitrary meshes and sampling the hi-resolution detail down to this new mesh. Dealing with seams created by UV border. As well as all the other interesting challenges and solutions we encountered and solved during production.

Animation and Player Control in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

A look at the techniques used by UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune and UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves for implementing the player character’s animation and control. Partial and additive animations, layering, remapping, flipping, performance and memory considerations are all examined in depth, as well as particular focus on the the player’s core movement implementation. This is a look at what worked, and what didn’t work, how we did what we did, how we’re going to improve it in the future, and what non-standard animation features proved particularly valuable for the player’s look and feel in the UNCHARTED series.

Getting Noticed: Why You Need an Online Portfolio and How to Make One

Acquiring the right skills is only the first step to getting hired in the games industry; now those skills need to be displayed. A well-written cover-letter and resume are important but, in game development, the online portfolio is king.

Using examples drawn from actual industry portfolios spanning multiple disciplines and laying out a step-by-step process for portfolio website and content generation, this talk will show you how to easily create a professional-quality portfolio website that will substantially increase your odds of being hired for a game development position no matter what your concentration or experience level.

Uncharted 2: HDR Lighting
John Hable (Programmer, Naughty Dog)

This session talks about HDR Lighting in UNCHARTED 2. The main focus will be Gamma/Linear-Space Lighting, Filmic Tonemapping, and Screen-Space Ambient Occlusion. Throughout the session, we will talk about all the little details that no one tells you, like why our SSAO only affects ambient light, how our highlights avoid clamping, and if specular maps should be stored in linear or gamma space.

Now that you’ve won almost every award out there maybe, just maybe you’ll bring out some more DLC.

P.S. When are you going to have a gaming weekend where you guys play the multiplayer?

F*** you Naughty Dog and f*** your awards.

Take care of your own game first.

Thanks to that flawed penalty system of yours I lost a lot of money today. I didn’t even do anything wrong.

I start a game, I have stats of 22-1 and 1 treasure, then I’m out all of a sudden.
Next game, I start well again but it freezes and when I turn my PS3 on again, I get a penalty. Then I try to play again. Again I’m good, however the screen goes black, the game says I was kicked and again I get a penalty. I didn’t even kill a single teammate. Those are just examples. I got three or four penalties overall just today. WTF?!

Do something about it you a**holes. And get the f*** back to 1.04. I’ve always been polite but enough is enough. This is just too much bull**** for a gamer to accept. Besides, I wouldn’t be so angry if you guys at least responded to all the hundreds and thousands of complaints about the current status of your multiplayer hmmm

yeah more like 1000 complaints by 50 people. i suppose u still dont realize that there r like 60000-70000 players out there and wat like 50-1000 hate this. so yeah think about that but i do agree with u about the dumb penalty thing.

Lol, I play online regularly and I hate the update. These numbers say nothing. And whoever I talk to hates it as well. I think ND should finally make a poll.

Besides, it’s irrelevant. We bought a final product. We pay for it. They have no right to take it away from us. The game as it is now is a different one. Do they change the wheels of your car after a months because they think it looks better to others then? Certainly not. I wouldn’t have paid for this MP and for the SP only, a rental would have done it.

But at least you agree with me about the penalty wink

i see your point and at first i really didnt like the update, but you got to look at the positives, you dont die to random grenades as often, not as many campers at the fort and i’ll admit that i WAS a camper but only at the fort but i havent played the fort in weeks, by the way there are two glitches in the fort that u have to fix ND, and please make 1.07 something that everyone wants.

the spawns need fixing and that is pretty much my only complaint other than the lag issues sometimes.

I agree with you on the penalty thing SN-A-A-A-KE. The other day it did all of those things to me and I went from 49 to 44.  It is ok now that I am back to 48 and almost 49 but I was really pissed off.  And another thing, the spawning infront of the tank.  I got spawned right when the tank came out and died.  Then I got spawned ne’er the end of the rout that the tank takes and it ran me over again.  This was one of my WTF moments.  ND like your awards, but PLEEEAAASSSSEEE fix the spawning system.

Ok, ND Arne or whoever it is that claims to be incharge or F’n up the uncharted 2 MP… you have many thing that needs fixn n no games perfect my biggest pain would definatly be the SPAWNS they’re ridiculous really to every aspect spawning with enemys happen consistently at random and shotn them down n havn them spawn right behind you jus 2 shot ur unsuspecting ass n the back n prolly give u a lil pump thnkn there good but this NEEDS fixd seriously considered better spawn options before this game totally sucks GOD 3 is coming so something needs to be changes to keep players through that time.

Ok, I’m an adjustable player. Update 1.05 took a while to get used to, after a week I got used to it. Not so great to see my saved cinema files get broke, that sucked big time!
But this 1.06 update is just more frustrating then ever. What has happen to the respawns? It’s ridicolus, how come everytime something get “fixed” something else gets F***ed?

Since you’ll never stop your updates on the pursuit for the perfect game, which you almost had at 1.04.

Here’s four most (according to me) important to fix:

* Respawn points.
* Gettin connection error and a penalty? WTF!? Sure, if I leave the game or I have a bad connection, but when the games freeze or whatever.. It’s not my fault ffs .. Come on.
* Re-Reduce the FAL! It was NOT overpowered, just because you had to have aiming skill to use it you reduced it so noobs win a duel with their overpowered AK47 against a FAL?
*Grenades, they didn’t even need any adjustments!

Everybody keeps naging about new Maps or skins. Put your time in fixing glitches and bugs instead!

Ok, I really want one skin, Chloes heistgear!

i only have 1 problem that i dont can buy things with the money i won in the game i dont can buy weapon upgrades or skins because they said i cant buy things

Although I REALLY want u guys to address the problems these gamers are mentioning, I’m not gonna focus on that just yet. Skins; I like to be able to see my character and like this game. Skins are the future my friends. 1st off we need some villian skins for the lady gamers. (Baronness[G.I.Joe]is the only one that springs to mind rite now)As for heroes,I gotta few suggestions; Punisher,Robocop,Terminator,Snake Pliskin,Deadpool,Cable,Snake-Eyes,Nick Fury,Neo[Matrix],Trinity,Aeon Flux,Jill Valentine,Lara Croft,Cross[Wanted] in assasins suit, etc, etc. I realize publishing and licensing and things of that sort would make it hard.I think though, that companies whom hold the rights to these characters could be easily convinced to let them be used on this game that is basically what those type of characters are all about...gunplay,neck-snappin’,and blowin’ people up.I know from playing UC2 alone,a lot of gamers share this sentiment, and would jump at the chance to purchase a skins pack similar to this if not this very one.It could a very sound decision,both fiscally and fundamentally,to onsider something like this for the near future. Just some food for thought. Thanx for your time.
