Tribeca Film Festival 2013

Journey as we follow Josh Scherr and his adventure with his Tribeca Film Festival panel.

By JScherr | Twitter @joshscherr | Friday May 24 2013

Tribeca Film Festival 2013

A few weeks back, I was given the opportunity to represent Naughty Dog on a panel at the Tribeca Film Festival.  The panel, entitled “New Standards, New Aesthetics,” aimed to discuss new creative formats and tools available to storytellers, including 3D, 4k digital cameras, and… video games?  Yeah, it might seem unusual to include video games at a film festival, but the TFF in recent years has provided avenues for interactive titles to be showcased to an audience that might not be as familiar with the medium.  Josh Topolsky – EIC of The Verge and the panel moderator – wanted to include us because he felt Naughty Dog’s titles bridge the gap between games and film.

Plus, it meant a trip to New York City with my family, so why not?

The panel was held at 92Y Tribeca, a cool community space used for theater, film, and other public events.  What’s nice about these panels is that they’re free to the general public, so anyone can attend without paying big bucks for a festival pass.  The room held about 150 people and was filled to capacity.

Before the panel started, I met Josh T. and the other panel members back stage to go over some of the questions beforehand.  We were a fairly eclectic bunch – a cinematographer, a digital post expert, a marketing president from Sony, and a video game developer.  I think I learned more about the latest digital filmmaking tech from them in 30 minutes backstage than I had reading dozens of articles.  That’s one of the great things about festivals like these: a chance to speak directly with the people doing actual work with the new technology.  It was fun chatting with them about storytelling and cinematic technique in games, as it was all completely new to them.

Here’s more information on the other panelists:

Christina Voros: http://christinavoros.com/

Michael Cioni: http://www.lightiron.com/about/management/michael-cioni

Alec Shapiro: https://blog.sony.com/leadership/alec-shapiro/

The panel itself went really well, save for some bizarre audio issues; the hour flew by and we certainly could’ve kept going.  You can watch the panel in its entirety here:

As often happens with these things, I didn’t get to half the things I wanted to talk about, but I had a chance to talk with Alexa Ray Corriea from Polygon afterwards.  You can read her write-up here: Polygon - The Last of Us Tribeca Film Festival 2013

I have to say the highlight of the panel happened backstage, five minutes after we finished.  The next panel that afternoon was between David Denby and A.O. Scott, the film critics for the New Yorker and the New York Times, respectively.  I’ve read their work for years and getting a chance to talk to them was both a little intimidating and surreal.  Denby was especially interested in the idea of interactive games, although he was a little skeptical about giving control to the player.  He actually seized me by the shoulders and said “when I see a film, I want to be controlled and manipulated by the director!”  As I explained to him, we have a lot of control over the player in our games – the trick is we try to be subtle about it.  The puppets only get angry when they find out about the strings.

The rest of my time in NYC was spent running around with my family, and I’ll spare you those details, but I do want to make another recommendation to those visiting the city: if you get a chance, I highly suggest you see Sleep No More, which I’d wanted to see for the better part of a year.  For lack of a better way to describe it, it’s an immersive, fully interactive Macbeth, staged in a massive multi-room warehouse designed to resemble a hotel from the 1940s.  Those of you interested in interactive narrative, game design, or just innovative theater should definitely seek it out.

The Music of The Last of Us: Gustavo Santaolalla

The Music of The Last of Us: Gustavo Santaolalla

Go behind the scenes and learn about the musical score in The Last of Us and how we got Gustavo Santaolalla, an Academy Award winning composer, involved on the project.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Friday May 17 2013

The Music of The Last of Us: Gustavo Santaolalla

When pre-production started in earnest on The Last of Us there was a folder of music files featuring work by some of the preeminent musicians in video games, television, and film. These tracks held a sampling of the ideal musical quality, direction, and tone we wanted to have for the project. The Academy Award winning work of Gustavo Santaolalla appeared multiple times. Being that he had never composed for video games before the thought of getting him to work on The Last of Us seemed a bit farfetched. He was approached by our music group at Sony and, well, this video will tell you the full story about the man himself and how he came to work on The Last of Us:

We are honored to have Gustavo’s music and talents in our game. The texture of Gustavo’s musical score serves the game’s narrative and the music is rife with poignant, descriptive and intimate sounds. His work is unlike anything heard in a video game before. It’s a beautiful, haunting, sonic landscape that makes the game’s themes more emotionally resonant and emphasizes thoughtfully how Joel, Ellie, and all the characters in the game perceive the world around them. It’s a masterful musical score.

Want a sampling of the sonic delight Gustavo crafted for The Last of Us? Visit the Sony Music Soundtracks SoundCloud set. If you pre-order the game, via the Sights & Sounds DLC pack, you’ll get full access to the official digital soundtrack. The soundtrack is also available for purchase as a CD via the Sony Masterworks label. The Last of Us arrives June 14, 2013.

The Last of Us Development Series Episode 2: Wasteland Beautiful

The Last of Us Development Series Episode 2: Wasteland Beautiful

Episode 2 in The Last of Us Development video series explores the game environments, how they are created, and how we made the game world of The Last of Us.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Tuesday April 09 2013

The Last of Us Development Series Episode 2: Wasteland Beautiful

In our first video in The Last of Us Development series we took a look at the Infected.  We explored their unpredictable nature, what the Cordyceps fungus has done to these humans, and how we as developers worked some plausible science about infection into the game. Area 5 returned to the studio to discover how we created the game world. The second video in the series looks at what went into the concept and design of the world and its environments in The Last of Us. Check it out:

Contrast is the key word for the development of every aspect in The Last of Us. There’s a counterpoint to nearly every detail in the game and we strive to show as much beauty as the ugly, brutal realities of the world allow. We think you’ll find our wasteland beautiful once you get into the game world in just a couple months.

Our next video in the series will explore the crafting and scavenging gameplay mechanics.  An in-depth documentary on the game disc will contain an expanded look at all the content in these videos. The Last of Us will be available June 14 2013.

The Last of Us explores many questions that deal with themes of loyalty, love, and redemption. We’re excited to hear what you have to say about the game and its narrative.

The Last of Us will be available June 14th, 2013.

Uncharted 3: Oddball Themed DLC

Uncharted 3: Oddball Themed DLC

Uncharted 3 Multiplayer will have the a fresh batch of oddball themed character parts available for purchase today!

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Tuesday March 19 2013

Uncharted 3: Oddball Themed DLC

The UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play launched a few weeks ago and we’ve seen a healthy uplift to our community to tune of over three hundred and fifty thousand downloads of the Free-to-Play client to date globally. We’re very excited to see our community grow and stoked to keep expanding the world of UNCHARTED to as many people as possible.

To keep that momentum going, as promised, we’re making new DLC available for purchase every month until June 2013. This month we’re recognizing Extraterrestrial Abductions Day – or a day around it anyway – by unveiling our Oddball themed character parts for your UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer characters. Why Oddball? Well, these character parts defy classification as they don’t quite fit among the numerous other parts we’ll have coming out over the next few months, and Extraterrestrial Abductions Day is a bit of an odd holiday anyway.

A full rundown of everything that’s available with our Oddball theme is over on our UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play page. We’ll have a bundle of all Oddball parts with an exclusive bonus item available for purchase in early April. Check out the in-game store or the PlayStation®Store to see what’s available.

Our Oddball theme means that new Tournament rewards can be earned. You can earn the Gas Mask Gun and Gas Mask Shirt as Tournament rewards. If you hit the gold tier you can earn the rare British Guard Hat for Cutter as well as Raptor Mask for Drake and Dive Helmet for Talbot by achieving Platinum status. Use your tickets to enter into the weekly Tournament and unlock these items as a testament to your skills.

Be sure to read our UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play FAQ for answers to most of your questions about the newly available UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play.

Log in and let’s all get a little odd! See you online!

Let us know what Saturday would be best for you in the comments below!

Reminder: if you’re looking to remove the ads from UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play you’ll need to purchase one of the following core components: Single Player Experience, Co-Op Adventure Mode, No Level Cap, or the DLC Map Packs. Please note you won’t earn XP until you purchase either the Level 25 limit or the no Level cap unlocks.

As always check out the Lab calendar on your Uncharted 3 stats page to learn about upcoming Labs and future multiplayer events. See you online!

Uncharted 3: The Lab and Community Update #2

Happy Tuesday! We launched UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play last week and we’ve seen a healthy uplift to our community to tune of over one hundred thousand downloads of the Free-to-Play in one week in North America alone. We’re excited to see our community grow and stoked to keep expanding the world of UNCHARTED to as many people as possible.

As a way to say thank you for all your continued support and give newcomers additional ways to play the multiplayer we’re adding Block Mesh Lab Maps #1 and #2 to The Lab this week. Also, both maps will be available in the Custom Games option. That means you can now play Game Designer Junki Saita’s (@dirt_herder) inaugural Block Mesh Lap Map and Lead Multiplayer Designer Robert Cogburn’s (@RobertCogburn) block mesh map creations as often as you’d like. We’re looking forward to seeing what kind of videos you’ll be making using these maps.

Our colorful theme continues and you can earn the Rainbow Gun and Rainbow Shirt as Tournament rewards. If you hit the gold tier you can earn the rare Bronze Mask for Drake. You get the very cool Shade Raptor Mask for Drake and Shade Dive Helmet for Talbot by achieving Platinum status. Use your tickets to enter into the weekly Tournament and unlock these items as a testament to your skills.

SilverDefender invited the Naughty Dog crew to play the EU community and we’ll have some Dogs playing online this Saturday, March 9 at 12noon PST. Visit the EU community events page and this thread for all the details. We hope to be holding many more events with you in the coming months.

EU users who are experiencing issues with earning XP in UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play after purchasing the UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Competitive MP- No Level Limit or the UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of Year Digital Edition we have sorted out the issues and we will follow up with the proper corrective measures in the forums. A reminder: XP doesn’t accrue on your profile past level 15 UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play until you unlock it. Only the money you will have earned will still be accumulated.

If you’re looking to remove the ads from UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Free-to-Play you’ll need to purchase one of the following core components: Single Player Experience, Co-Op Adventure Mode, No Level Cap, or the DLC Map Packs. Please note you won’t earn XP past Level 15 until you purchase either the Level 25 limit or the no Level cap unlocks.

The Lab calendar will remain the same for a few months but we’ll be adding to it in the future. Visit the Lab calendar on your Uncharted 3 stats page to learn about upcoming Labs and future multiplayer events. See you online!
