UNCHARTED 2 Title Update 1.04 – Jan 27, 2010

UNCHARTED 2 Title Update 1.04 – Jan 27, 2010

The next time you connect online with UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves you will be prompted for a Title Update.

Title Update 1.04 makes the following change:

  • Allows players affected by “error syncing player data” issue to connect again to multiplayer

While the Title Update 1.04 changelist isn’t copious, the update does address something we’ve been monitoring and looking into for a little while now. Late last year, we spotted a small percentage of our player base receiving the “error syncing player data” message, which was preventing those players from connecting to UNCHARTED 2 multiplayer from that moment forward. As soon as we spotted this, we started looking into the issue, replicating it locally, and investigating possible solutions so that everyone who wanted to participate in our multiplayer modes would be able to do so. It’s been in the works a little longer than anticipated, but a solution to the “error syncing player data” issue has finally arrived with this Title Update.

There is, however, one important detail—addressing this issue has required us to roll back only the affected accounts to Level 1.

Just to be clear, this is going to happen ONLY to the accounts who couldn’t connect because of the “error syncing player data” message. Everyone else who has been able to connect and play normally will be entirely unaffected.

This was not an easy decision for us to make. Over time it became clear to us that there was absolutely no other option remaining to eliminate this issue for all affected—and ensure it doesn’t happen again. Our team at Naughty Dog was tireless in looking for a solution over the last few months—we took a look at every possible way to address this, using every possible approach we could think of, and even ones we didn’t think of initially. At the conclusion of our efforts, we were left with the solution implemented in Title Update 1.04—which forced us to roll back affected accounts to Level 1 to clear up the “error syncing player data” issue.

We understand that some players affected by this issue may find the solution in Title Update 1.04 less than ideal and we completely understand how you feel. If there was an alternative that didn’t require rolling back the affected accounts, we would have implemented that in a second. We hope that those of you that weren’t able connect until today’s Title Update will consider joining us again in multiplayer despite the Level roll back—we look forward to playing with and against you online!

UPDATE
There were a few questions that came up that we wanted to include in this post.

Will this prevent “error syncing player data” in the future?
Yes, we’ve taken steps to prevent this error from coming up again. We cannot account for every circumstance, but we’re confident no players will see this issue arise in the future. Please let us know here if you believe you have been affected by a new “error syncing player data” issue after you have installed Title Update 1.04

I’m getting “error syncing models” and can’t play multiplayer!
The “error syncing models” is a wholly different issue and can be cleared up easily by doing the following:

  • On the PS3 XMB bar, click right until you reach the “Game” icon
  • Click up until you reach the “Game Data Utility” icon and hit X to enter the utility
  • Using “triangle” delete ONLY the Uncharted 2 data and ONLY within the “Game Data Utility”
  • Restart Uncharted 2, allow it to install all the Title Updates, enter Multiplayer and you will go through a longer than normal “Syncing live data” process

You should be all set after that!
NOTE: Do not delete your saved games in the “Saved Data Utility”!

Am I to understand your youngster made level 57 from level 1 in 16 days - that would be just shy of an astonishing accomplishment . I just hit 56 after sweating months of long days and nights of game play . I am thrilled there is a game maker that cares enough to have after marketing consumer awareness , this is a rare deal . 60 bucks and done is what really sucks . Getting there is all the fun . good gaming - see you on the P S N , or your son or whoever the she is you mentioned . Thanks Naughty Dog .

I’m pretty sure Naughty Dog just said that there was nothing else they could do.  They fixed the problem so stop whinning.  Oh, how about having your kid do something outside.  Getting to 57 in 16 days is rediculous.

XxMOSURExX posted January 28, 2010 12:02 pm

It is possible that he ment 15 days of total play time, not 15 days in real life.  15 days of “total play time” would be totally acceptable to reach such a level.  On the other hand, reaching that level in fifteen days of real life would be quite absurd.

pickupdoctor posted January 28, 2010 3:31 pm

So now he has 15 days to get back to that Level.  And I bet he will do it faster because he has been practicing those 15 days and should be able to do it in 12 days.  I am at Level 38 and it took me 54 hours of game play, little bit over 2 days.

Hi, this is to the naugthy dog team, My name is Pablo I am from Costa Rica, I am using a American account to play the game, and I was wondering if you have notice the bug or glitch at the fort map when you play plunder mode, it’s about the treasure getting in the lake or sea and it’s impossible to reach, or sometimes disappear in the mountains out of reach,So the game kinda convert to deatchmatch since there is nothing to do but killing.
I just wanted to know if it’s happening to everyone or just the guys I play with(it has happen a lot of times, but now it’s happening like to much), but I want to know if you are fixing this issue anytime soon. Thanks hope you guys are doing well.

arne posted January 27, 2010 1:02 pm

The only solution left did not allow us to retain any of your game information, requiring us to roll back your account to Level 1. Don’t forget that for some people keeping the same PSN account is important to them as well—they have built a history with it in the PlayStation community and they have a friends list they would like to keep.

cBugatti posted January 27, 2010 4:33 pm

arne, do you have to go through the connecting bar and all of the “syncing live data” everytime you play online? i have perfect internet and it took me 10 mins to connect.

cBugatti posted January 27, 2010 4:36 pm

now it took two mins to “find players” and next to my id i hav a series of gray lines for wifi. does that mean i have no internet??

M-Brother posted January 27, 2010 8:25 pm

When you are on the connecting bar, “syncing live data” only happens if you need to download NEW changes to the mutiplayer. So you will see “syncing live data” only as frequent as ND updates. You always have to connect, but you do not always need to sync.

Syncing time is based on your connection speed and probably how busy the servers are. Since you have a good connection, it took you 10 minutes because you have not connected to multiplayer lately and therefore had a TON of updates to download.

“Finding players” speed is based on your connection speed as well as the connection speed of every other person that is “finding players” at that moment. Its figuring out the best combination of players. It can take 2 minutes or it can take 2 seconds, it just depends. And I, too, have gray lines for my ethernet-cord connection so don’t worry about the color of those lines. Good luck, hope to see you out there!

Great Job, Naughty Dog.
Arne, when can we expect an update that allows online players interested in a co-op to play either Survival or Goldrush exclusively?  I love Survivals but am not particularly fond of Goldrush.  I would really enjoy the ability to search for an online game without having to hope that I don’t get stuck with a Goldrush.  Thanks.  Keep up the good work!

Keeng44 posted January 27, 2010 2:42 pm

Yes! Listen to this man! There’s got to be on option to opt out of a game when a particular game is selected. I HATE gold rush even on easy, and with good players you can NEVER beat it, and if you did pass the 10 rounds, that just luck. Oh and there’s sometimes a guy stuck on survival mode on top, its The Fort map.

DJoseph_13 posted January 28, 2010 8:13 pm

ya it’s easy to kill him though. at the very end of the map (where the heroes would spawn in competitive) there is a balcony where enemies spawn. sometimes one guy stays up there and you can just barely see him. you can kill him with a grenade or FAL.

igniteryan posted January 27, 2010 1:03 pm

Quit telling us you care. Those that are smart will never believe you, Arne.

If you cared, you would have fixed this problem weeks after it was discovered, not months. If you cared, you would restore my stats, which are still to this second are available on YOUR stats page.

The only good thing that came from this update is the fact that a complex company like you guys might actually consider taking backups of our stats from now on. Key word: might. Key word when talking about Naughty Dog: won’t.

Dengarde posted January 27, 2010 1:07 pm

HA. Thats halarious. It’s a shame that you have no clue what you’re talking about.

Unless of course you work for another game company and know exactly how long it takes to do this kind of stuff and exactly how to do it. Then I apologize.

igniteryan posted January 27, 2010 1:12 pm

You say I have no clue what I’m talking about, yet you provide no analysis about what’s so misleading about my post.

I understand that it takes a while for Naughty Dog to find the error, fix it, and submit a patch to Sony. However, the fact that it wasn’t a top priority (even though Arne said it was) is an outrage. They decided to fix glitches in the map instead of fixing glitches that prevented hundreds of people from playing. Not well played.

If you didn’t have the ESPD glitch then you just don’t understand the frustration that we have gone through.

arne posted January 27, 2010 1:17 pm

The length of time it took to address the issue was PRECISELY because we wanted to find a solution that didn’t affect the accumulated statistics for any of our players that were affected by the issue. We exhausted every possibility, we tried everything we could AND we had to QA test every candidate for a solution—that took a LOT of time before we entered into the proper QA and certification process.

igniteryan posted January 27, 2010 1:20 pm

Thanks, Arne. That’s all I wanted to hear. Just promise this won’t happen again, alright? raspberry I love this game too much to go without it for 3+ months.

Cregan4584 posted January 27, 2010 2:17 pm

Leveling up takes a lot of time. Imagine your a level 60 (which you are not. I’ve run you down in MP before) and it all gets wiped away. I’m not arguing the fact that it took time to get it out, but your a turd for just calling the guy gay when he has a very legitimate right to be mad.

Ienpw posted January 27, 2010 3:17 pm

It’s not so much the level as it is the boosters, the skins & the coop upgrades.

The level rollback is not that bothering (even if the 50+ badge looked better :D), and it won’t affect the way I play the game, but losing everything we unlocked is maddening.

But can you give us a little clarification, please. The original bug that caused the error has been fixed right ? it won’t happen again ?

Isn’t there any way to compensate ?

Anyway, thanks for the update ND

CaptainGillette posted January 27, 2010 1:21 pm

There’s a big difference between “they don’t care” and “it’s technically impossible”. If they didn’t care, they would have simply left people with the bug unable to play period.  They cared enough to spend a few months investigating and testing, looking for a solution. Unfortunately that solution means your level gets reset, but it’s better than no solution at all.

TheBigGreenHoody posted January 27, 2010 2:57 pm

Exactly.  Want an example of a dev that doesn’t care?  Just look at Sega and the Bayonetta fiasco.

Want to change stats, no spice, i’ll give you mine… I can’t see childs cry, it breaks my heart :]

Ungreatful persons… probably all that shout about loosing the stats shouldn’t be playing the game since they aren’t old enough to!

Nevertheless… Since ND gained many awards, and the income should be nice from all the sales, i belive that the DLC’s should be free!

It makes no sense on having to pay for maps for example, paying for skins i understand..

And to end this i’ll just shout this out..

CaptainGillette posted January 27, 2010 1:05 pm

I’m sure you guys have already explored this avenue, but since the stats on the website still display the correct stats for people who haven’t yet run the update, is there no way to manually reinstate the correct stats for those who are about to lose them based on what’s showing on your website?

In any case, glad you’ve fixed it… bummer of a bug to hammer out.

arne posted January 27, 2010 1:14 pm

While the stats that are on our website are based off of the stats you accumulate while playing games, the two systems (one that saves it to your account and one that reports it to the website) are mutually exclusive and we can’t share data between the two.

igniteryan posted January 27, 2010 1:16 pm

Thanks for the clarification.

CaptainGillette posted January 27, 2010 1:24 pm

But is there any way to export the data from the one database and enter it into the other for those who had the error, or are the data formats so completely different that any conversion would be too complex to be worth the effort?

brinstarx posted January 27, 2010 1:56 pm

Given the huge impact to players’ stats and levels, I’m sure they thought of everything they possibly could have done to _not_ have to rollback characters… A rollback is a very extreme thing to do, and I don’t think any game company undertakes those without exploring all _viable_ options.

(And I’m saying this with the knowledge that I may be pissed off as hell when I get home and see that my level 40 has been rolled back. I’m not sure it has been, but I think it’s possible that it might be.)

arne posted January 27, 2010 2:20 pm

It’s just not going to work. The only way we could do so would be akin to some boosting-style backend magic, which would then “break” the stats reporting and wouldn’t ever be accurate. Not to mention it’s unethical, unfair and probably borderline legal and who knows what else.

Just to get this out of the way… I hate the idea of any new skins that don’t exist inside the world of Uncharted. It’s just seems too out of place. You guys made the single-player look so amazingly real, but now there are rumors of you adding characters from other games that make it like a fantasy? What is that? Whether the rumors are true or not, unrealistic skins are a bad idea.

AS FOR THE UPDATE:
Thank you for fixing it. I recommend on looking in to what “igniteryan” above me said about the lost player’s stats. The only other thing that bothers me are the Connection Error’s (my signal is perfect) and the insanely long waiting time of finding players. Thank you again.

brinstarx posted January 27, 2010 1:20 pm

New skins: not a rumour. They’re adding skins of characters from different games as purchasable DLC. I’m not a fan of it either, but I won’t be buying them. If those skins had offered any women characters at all (and not ones dressed gratuitously), I would have reconsidered.

McJoggin posted January 30, 2010 9:46 am

There’s nothing gratuitous about it. We PAY to have them dressed that way! XD

LiToDiAl posted January 27, 2010 5:13 pm

I remember seeing pictures of multiplayer being QA tested before the game’s release and most of the players in the matchmaking screen had level 60 emblems. I also recall Rekliss_Abandon being a level 60 at the first launch of the game. I cannot believe that Naughty Dog cannot go in and adjust player scores to reflect the stats on the website. Thankfully, I was not affected by the issue. But, I come here in support of the people that were affected by it and feel these players should be supported in one way or another. If you cannot go in and adjust the stats (which I would truly have a very hard time believing), at least give them a voucher for DLC or something. I support ND 0, but this is kinda shady. (please don’t delete my stats now!!!!)

should say one hundred percent

On the bright side, it will be fun to have a few low levelers totally owning the game

Cregan4584 posted January 27, 2010 6:12 pm

If I had this problem and my stats were reset, I wouldn’t restart it and I would not support Naughty Dog purchases in the future. Not unless they made it up to me.

Anghild posted January 28, 2010 2:46 am

I probably wont restart either. But honestly, you’re willing to skip “Uncharted 3” for stats?

I’m a man of principal.

whats wierd to me is that my ps3 has frozen mid game like three times, yet i have never lost 40000 dollars yet, like im happy i still have all my money, but iz kind of wierd

Anghild posted January 28, 2010 2:56 am

It’s cause it resets back to a 30 second penalty every few hours. Not sure how often. It’s to not penalize people who have an occasional disconnect.

You can easily test this. Quit out of one match, and face your 30 second penalty. Now try and quit out of the second one, and you’ll get a warning that you’ll loose 40k. Try again in a few hours, and you should be back to the 30 second penalty. Think it is a fair way they’ve implemented it.

If you’re disconnecting more than once an hour, get your line checked.

Wow, this is a truely devastating blow. I had a level 58 account when I was hit by the error on January 1st. Surely you are able to manually edit stats in the database though? Can’t you just update the cash value for each account, thus restoring the level?

thanks for fixing the problem naughty dog

Keeng44 posted January 27, 2010 2:45 pm

You guys should give 2x the experience for a weekend so that those who lost stats would want to come back and maybe get a little head start . Plus you might get more people to play..  thanks N.D I love your game ! One of the best games Ive played in my entire life, thank you so so so much !

How about a Triple Cash Weekend ND? Get the party going, give the unlucky people a chance to regain some serious cash and the rest of us an excuse to go back fighting for more! :D

this is the dlc details. The first content pack will be free and in the Store on January 28. It contains multiplayer character models of Resistance 2’s Nathan Hale and a Chimera, InFamous’ Cole (in both “good” and “evil” forms) and Zeke, and Killzone 2’s Tomas Sevchenko and a Helghast soldier. The second DLC pack, dated February 25, adds two maps, one of which is based on the first Uncharted’s “Ruins” area, and multiplayer models of the first game’s Nate, Elena, Atoq Navarro, Eddy Raja, Roman Gabriel, and a mercenary. This pack won’t be free, but no price has been specified. The third DLC pack, available April 15 and also premium, adds a new co-op multiplayer mode, along with four new maps and five new character skins.

OUCH! Wow, my heart goes out to all the Player Sync Errored people out there who waited so long just to get back to Level 1. Dang, that’s a punch in the guts. But at least they can play now. =]
